Between the Trees

Between the Trees
Roaming through the tributaries of night
air, created by the space between the trees.
The bark is whispering to me. Starlight
is slinking through the leaves.
I have known these trees for some long months and
their bark beckons to run my fingers, seek
along its cracks, climb above the ignorant
underbrush. As I ascend, I feel peace.

As I ascend higher, I perceive
the breeze. It churns the clouds, the leaves, my heart.
Trees not as trusting as I once believed;
listen to the ways they grow apart.
Searching for security, I am eclipsed.
The bark crumbles under my fingertips.
